The Apostles of Atheistic Materialism
The origins of the anarchist movement in 19th century Spain
a.k.a. “What Kind of Libtards Were They?”

My most recent podcast with Pete Quiñones on the topic of the Spanish Civil War, explaining why the anarchist movement in Spain came out of nowhere in the late 19th century and became so dominant at a grassroots level, whereas the Marxist and state socialist movements became almost strictly associated with Madrid and the establishment liberal parties.

The Spanish Anarchists: The Heroic Years by Murray Bookchin
While most general interest books on the Spanish Civil War strike a sort of “Choose Your Own SCW” position, Murray Bookchin wrote the best single-source sympathetic, pro-anarchist but starkly honest approach to the topic of the development of the anarchist factions in Spain beginning in the 19th century and up to the war itself.
The Spanish Labyrinth by Gerald Brennan
I endorse Brennan’s work for a number of reasons, one of them being that the first edition was published in 1943, and the second edition was a revisiting by Brennan of his own prejudices and assumptions based upon the (limited, often inaccurate) information available during the Civil War. It’s a work of passion and sympathy for the normal people on both sides of the war.
¡Arriba! - Arise!
Will give it a listen this week. Per usual looking forward to it. I composed a little poem about Spain and thought it might be interesting to you.
